How will I know if my DVD burner can burn Dual layer DVD-r?

When I tried to erase my DVD-RW and burn it again, I saw some key words, like DVD-rw and DL and other stuff in my burner, I'm not really sure it was fast. How will I know my DVD burner is capable of accepting Dual layer DVD, without wasting money on trying to burn one? If it's not capable will it damage my DVD Sony Burner?
